Introduction:

How to effectively teach large classes has long been of concern to all English  teaching departments.

Class size negatively affecting the quality of teaching and instructor effectiveness. This  is particularly important because most division classes are over fifty students and the instructor affected the quality of  classes more  than did class size.It may surprise many teachers to know that classes rated best by students tended to be a little  larger than the worst rated  classes.

When does class size" Make a Difference" ? Results have often been mixed , with some methods of instruction favoring small classes and other methods being as or more effective in large classes.

Large classes are as effective as small classes when the goals involve learning factual information and comprehending that information. When traditional achievement tests are used to measure learning , large classes compare well with smaller classes that have been found more effective when instructional goals involve higher level cognitive skills including application, analysis , and synthesis.Smaller classes provide for  greater contact between students  and teachers , which appears to be most needed for students with low motivation, those with little knowledge of the subject matter ,or those who have difficulty grasp in conceptual material. Smaller classes are also more effective than large ones in affecting student attitudes. In sum, the optimal size of a class depends on the instructional goals being pursued.

The main advantage smaller classes have over larger ones is that they provide students with greater opportunities for interaction with subject matter, with the professor  and with one another. Here are some suggestions that  seem appear on nearly every list of large class “how to`s people” have varying opinions on how “large” the number of students should be in a so called “large” class. There can be  no quantitative definition of what constitutes a “large class”, as perceptions of this will vary from context to context.

However , most English teachers generally agree that a language class with 50-60 or more is “large” enough. Now this essay tries to give some advice on how to deal with a relatively large number of students in a class, what are the difficulties faced by teachers, and kind of activities are more suitable for such classes?

Physical layout

-              check out the room in advance.

-              Test the projection of your voice in the room

-              What equipment do you need to order?

-              Can your materials be seen from the back of the room?

-              Be prepared in case the technology fails.

  Part 1

Tips for teaching large classes

1.                Personalize , personalize, personalize: learn and use the names of your students, even in a large class. As difficult as  this is , it goes  a long  way toward personalizing the class. You can  have successfully learn student name by having seating charts, requiring students to attend office hours in small groups, taking pictures of the class ( with student permission),  arriving to class early and  greeting students as they enter, and conversing with students over email.

2.    Avoiding  plagiarism :There is a general perception that the likelihood of plagiarism is exacerbated by large classes. If this  is  the case, one reason students may deliberately cheat in a large class is because they may feel somewhat anonymous and “lost in the crowd” and therefore believe they are less likely to be caught. Alternatively , if students in large classes plagiarise unitentionally this  might be as a result  of having limited or no opportunity to check referencig and /or collaboration conventions with a lecturer or  tutor. A lack of clear understanding of assessment requirements is particulalry an issue for some first year and many other students, for whom higher education  referencing and colaboration “rules” are unfamiliar.

3.         Develop good disciplines in a large class for better  management:

*Establish a code of behaviour that is created by teacher and learners together. It should state clear basic rules of conduct that learners understand, such as:

-They have to work quietly

-They may talk , but not loudly

-              children who have finished the lesson tasks can read a book to keep them busy.

*Use the environment outside the classroom:It offers a new, different space when children get noisy or bored ,and helps to  reduce overcrowding.

-              you can also work with some groups inside the classroom while the other groups are working outside (use different tasks or the same task)

-              You need  to set up outdoor activities clearly and carefully and monitor them.

Appoint responsible group leaders who can help maintain discipline. They can also give out and take in work for the groups, and explain what groups must do. Remember that:

-It’s  always a good idea to split the class up into . small discussion groups ,of not more than 6 ,or ideally 3, 4 .Pair work is also useful.Another way to tap on the synergy of large  classes ,is having class activities like gramer and vocabulary competitions , or even asking each to act out a drama .That way, every student feels motivated enough to respond in class .And giving  the students something to prepare at  home  for  presentationat the next class, give every student the chance to"show off"in class.

Part 2

–The learning environment of the large class is safe and relaxing .

In the large class, students are very active ,but in the small class, everyone keeps silent.

Students feel relaxed in the large  class. They have nothing to fear  about .

In the large class, students have their own time and space to think about  what they are learning.

-A student can’t learn very well when she is under the pressure of being asked by the teacher to answer any  questions. In the large class, she feels s/he is learning in a safe environment , and therefore s/he can focus on learning.

-In the large class , every  time a question is raised by the teacher , there  are  always some  students who can  come up with some answers. A student can compare and think about the answers.

In the large  class , students  can quietly listen to what the  teacher says and put them into their  hearts.

-There is some freedom in the large  class. If a student  has  already known what the teacher is teaching, s/he can  preview what’s to be taught or do something more useful.

Part3:The problems associated with teaching in large classes can be physical, psychological and technical.

-Discomfort: Many teachers are worried by the physical constraints  imposed by large numbers in confined classrooms. They feel unable to promote student interaction, since there is no room to move about .Some teachers also feel that teaching in large classes is physically very wearing.

-Control :Teachers are often worried by discipline aspects of large classes. They  feel they are unable to control what is happening, and that  the classes become too noisy.

- Individual attention: Many teachers are concerned that are neglecting the needs of  their students as individuals.

-Evaluation: Teachers feel a responsibility  for  checking all of  their student’s work , and are worried if they cannot do so.

-Learning effectiveness: All teachers want their students to learn English. They are understandably worried if they don`t know who is learning what.

However, problems such as these are not impossible to be solved, or at least partially. In fact what the teachers perceive as problems associated with large classes sometimes  may not  be so problematic  to the students. The following questionnaire shows what the students who are learning English both in large and small classes think about the large classes.

There is a sense of competition in the large class.

The atmosphere in the large class is relatively better and more lively. Students from different small groups are secretly competing with one another , which  enhances learning.

When  a student sees so many students studying English hard in the same class, s/he also have to study hard.

-The student can  always learn not only from the teacher, but also from their classmates .s/he can see clearly the distance between herself/himself and others, which makes him/her  work harder.

-Because the students are learning with the students from other groups their  sense of competition is strengthened. The students  feel that they can’t afford to lose or to - be left behind.

Large class.. brings the students into an atmosphere of competition.

Learning in a large class is an interesting and novel experience.

-The lively atmosphere in the large class can stimulate students’ learning .

-In high school , students are  used to have large English classes. It’s a wonderful thing that a number of students sit together and learn English in a very think English studying climate.

Learning in a large class helps students to make more friends.

-It (large class ) helps students  make many friends from other classes.

-In the large class , students get to know more people and it is more likely for students to know people who share them interests and hobbies.

Part 4

 TEACHING MIXED ABILITY LARGE CLASSES

The use of pair and group work is essential if you  are to involve all the members of the class .

By pairing off weaker  and stronger students and involving both you should ensure maximum participation of all the students.

A second area  of  activity that can be productive in mixed ability classes is project work.Again ,this can work successfully using mixed groups where the stronger help the weaker but another approach is to from groups that  are at approximately the  same level and assign different tasks that are appropriate to the level of each group .

A third area is that of homework. If you set the whole class the same homework task irrespective of level, then you will have expect very mixed results. As with progress tests, the purpose of homework should be to consolidate class work.

Choral drilling can be an effective way of involving weaker or shy students.

It can give excellent  practice in rhythm and intonation,as well as reinforcing word order and grammatical structure.

Finally,be diplomatic in your questioning techniques.Try to avoid putting weaker students “on the spot” by nominating them to be the first to answer a question in open  class. Instead, try to encourage a culture of attentive listening in the classroom so that you ask a stronger student first and then ask a weaker  student to repeat the answer. It may take time but once this style of interaction becomes habitual it can be very productive in terms of class dynamics.

Part 5

A.Share ideas with the teachers of large classes

One of the easiest and  cheapest ways to start collaborative teaching is to swap ideas . Teachers often do  this anyway. You can formalize this process at your school in two ways.

Organize a folder entitled Ideas and  Tips Divide it into sections (either by level , or by theme ) and ask other teachers to contribute. For a project like this to work you really have to have someone in charge of keeping the folder or folders in order. Why not rotate  that duty among teachers ? you could also  have “Tip or Activity the Week” that you can post on the office wall.

Offer to organize a meeting to exchange ideas at your work. All you need is a time and a place where teachers can meet .

Sharing ideas in your school can be beneficial for all involved .

Part 6

B.Start a teacher discussion group about the management of large classes

This aspect of  collaborative teaching means going further than just swapping tips and materials.  Get together with a group of other teachers (or even just one other teacher !) to exchange ideas and methods and reflect on your teaching. This could be discuss problems you have had with a certain class or course book , to share good and bad moments in class  or to reflect on a particular  aspect of your teaching. It could be a formalized meeting with other teachers  at the school or a more informal meeting.

Here are some directions that a teacher discussion group could take :

The group meets to discuss discipline problems in their classes and ways of dealing with them.

The group meets to offer advice and suggestions to one member who is having trouble  motivating a class.

Each member of the group writes some reflections on two different classes one which went well and one which didn’t go so well,Teachers come together and exchange reflections. They then discuss the classes .

Part 7

C. Observe a colleague teaching in a large class

Peer observation is a great way to get new ideas and see how others deal with everyday classroom occurrences.Have you ever wondered what was going on in the classroom next door? Why was it so quiet or why  was there so much laughter ? Try it !!!

Conclusion:

However, Those teachers and they are numerous – who have to cope with classes that contain 50 or  more learners are therefore often ill- prepared to deal with the situation in  which they find themselves in schools .Most English teachers tend to view teaching English in large classes  rather negatively.

They often  associate large English classes with disorderliness, lack of control, lack of student’s attentiveness, lack of teacher – student interactions, and therefore,  lack in efficiency and effectiveness.

Anyway, is the size of the class since as soon as the number  of groups passes a certain number , it is difficult  to control what happens go further  by saying that anything you can do in a large class you can do better in a small one.

However ,not all English teachers think that class size matters.

Such teachers would say that good teaching is good teaching :what holds true for small classes also holds true for  large ones. Recent  research shows that "Reductions in class size" to less than 20 students without changes in instructional  methods cannot  guarantee improved academic achievement.and  that class size appears to have more influence on student attitudes, attention, interest ,and motivation than on academic achievement. In reality , it is not very uncommon  that some teachers enjoy teaching in large classes and they feel that  if proper  strategies are adopted and the classes are well- organized , they may have a greater sense of  achievement. As Felder states “that the instructors satisfaction may be even greater in the large classes “.

But  when you do it with 40 or more you know you’ve really accomplished something.

Testing in the English Language

        Introduction:

Testing is an important part of every teaching and learning experience. Any teacher , whether an experienced teacher or an inexperienced one really feels a need to improve their skills in constructing and administering tests at different levels of teaching. In this article I am going to have a brief look at " the importance of testing"," test ,measurement and evaluation", " how it helps students learn English", "how it helps teachers of English ", "the relationship between testing and teaching ", " how to construct it", and some suggestions on how to prepare some kinds of tests.

The importance of testing:

Education is the most vital and important enterprise in any society. Next to defense, it is the largest economic enterprise in most countries. Therefore, it is obvious that its processes and products should be evaluated. In fact , evaluation is a major consideration in any educational setting. Teachers have always wanted to know how much their students have learned . Students , teachers, administrators and parents all work towards achieving educational goals , and it is quite natural that they would want to ascertain the degree to which those goals have been realized. Measurement and evaluation are essential devices to help them achieve most of those objectives in order to make sound educational decisions. Decisions that will outline the framework of  more appropriate system of education.

Test ,Measurement , and Evaluation:

The terms test, measurement and evaluation are sometimes used interchangeably, but some educators make distinctions among them. The term" test" is usually considered the narrowest of the three terms. "Test" often connotes the presentation of a set of questions to be answered.

We can measure characteristics by means other than giving tests. Using observation, rating scales, or other devices that allow us to obtain information in a quantitative form is "measurement " .

" Evaluation is a professional judgement  or as a process that  allows one to make a judgement about the value of a measure.

It is also important to point out that we never measure or evaluate people . We measure or evaluate characteristics or properties of people.

Language Testing:

As mentioned before, testing is an important part of  any  language teaching and language learning experience. Well made tests, prepared by teachers or a team of skillful test makers, can help students in two ways.

First , testing will encourage the students and will motivate them to learn the subject matter. Such tests can help create positive attitudes toward your class. In this way teacher are able to establish a sense of accomplishment  in the students` minds.

Second, testing will help the students prepare themselves and learn the materials. They will benefit from the test results and the discussion over these results. In this way, testing helps them to master the language. They are helped, of course, when they study for exams . In short, properly made English tests can help create positive attitudes toward instruction by giving students a sense of accomplishment and a feeling that the teacher`s evaluation of them matches what  he has taught them. Good tests also help them learn the language by forcing them to study hard, emphasizing the course objectives, and by showing them where they need to improve.

Testing can help teachers of English as well. A teacher of English as a second language is generally expected to feel responsible for the results of his/her instruction. The test can help him/her answer the important question" Have I been effective in my teaching ?" In other words, he can use the results to recognize his own efforts as well as the efforts of the students. It also helps us to find out our weaknesses and try to redirect our future efforts .

Why Test?

Teachers of English as a foreign language should be about to explain and justify their activities in class.

It is quite obvious that tests can help us improve the quality of instruction in any educational setting. Both the test- givers  and the test-takers benefit from the test result. A good test also enables us to locate the precise areas of difficulty encountered by the class as a whole or by the individual student. Just  as it is necessary for the doctor first to diagnose the patient`s illness ,so it is equally necessary for the teacher to diagnose the student`s weaknesses and difficulties. If the teacher is not able to identify and analyse the errors a student makes in handling the target language, he or she will not manage to present any assistance through appropriate remedial work and additional practice.

Language Teaching and Language Testing:

Teaching and testing are so closely interrelated that it is impossible to work in either field without being concerned about  the other. Testing is viewed  as a constructive and practical teaching strategy giving learners useful opportunities for discussion of language choices.

Test Construction:

It should be mentioned that test construction is not a one-dimensional process. In addition to determining the form and function of the test, the content and number of the items should be specified in advance. More specially , to construct a test , the following steps should be taken.

First , the function and the form of the test should be decided upon.

Second, the content of the items should be specified .This step is also called planning.

Third, the items should be prepared in accordance with the specified content.

Fourth, the items should be reviewed.

Fifth, the items should be pretested in order to determine their statistical characteristics . And finally ,the test should be validated . Thus steps in developing a test can be listed as follows:

                1. Determining the function and the form.

                2. Planning( determining the content of the test ).

                3. Preparing the items.

                4. reviewing the items.

                5. Pretesting the items.

                6. Validating the test.

Any test which is administered for decision-making purposes must go through these steps. Otherwise

, it will not be valid.

Suggestions for preparing True- False items:

         1. Avoid using statements which measure trivial points. For example, the following sentence , is not an appropriate item because the information is so trivial that the examinee would be led to memorize certain points rather than comprehend the flow of language in a natural context.

        Example:

The past tense of "talk" is " talked".

       2. Avoid using broad general statements. Because most broad generalizations tend to be true. Consider the following examples :

         a) The president of a country is usually elected.

         b) People have friendly relationships in many societies.

      3. Avoid using negative statements.

         Example:

          a) Students are not required to memorize the lesson.

         b) It is unacceptable for the students not to memorize the lesson.

But if using negative statements is inevitable, write it in capital letters or underline it.

      4. Avoid using long and complex sentences. The complexity of the sentence prevents the students from getting to the point being tested.

     5. Make true and false statements approximately of similar length difficulty and distribution. If the true statements are longer than the false ones, the students will find a clue to mark longer statements as true  even if they don`t have the knowledge of the points being tested.

Suggestions for Preparing Matching Items:

A common form of matching  items is to arrange items in two columns and require the examinees to match the corresponding items from the two columns.

             Example:

Match the words in column I with their antonyms in column II . There are more  items in column I than required.

                    I                                     II

    1. construct                              a. accept

    2. refuse                                   b. clarify

    3. approach                              c. destroy

    4. confuse

In constructing matching items these suggestions may be helpful:

      1. Use homogeneous materials in a single matching item. For example if the item is to measure vocabulary knowledge, it should be limited to the definitions ,antonyms or synonyms alone, and not a combination of the three. It should not include grammatical structures.

      2. Clarify the way the items are to be matched from the two columns.

     3. Include an unequal number of items in each column.

     4. Keep the list brief and place the shorter columns to the right.

Suggestions for Preparing Multiple- Choice Items:

     1. The stem should be quite clear and state the point to be tested unambiguously .

        Example:

       He is .............

   a) one of the students passing the test.

   b) one of the students failing the test.

   c) the who left the testing session early.

   d) the man who did not participate in the test.

Such an item is faulty in which the stem does not pose the problem.

     2. The stem should include as much of the item as possible.

     3. Negative statements should be avoided because they are likely to be ignored by the examinee.

     4. All of the alternatives must be grammatically correct by themselves and consistent with the stem.

     5. Every item should have one correct or clearly best answer.

      Example:

When Hossein called, I ......the house.

                 a) left                                   b) had left

                 c) was leaving                      d) have left

In this example , there is more than one possible answer,(b) and (c). Such item should be avoided.

       6. All distracters should be of similar length and level of difficulty.

      7. Using "all of the above " or " none of the above " as an alternative is not recommended.

      8. Correct responses should be distributed approximately equally but randomly among the alternatives.

      9. The stem should be short with a blank.

Characteristics of a Good Test:

In addition to having good items, a test should have certain characteristics. These are: reliability, validity and practicality.

The tendency toward consistency from one set of measurement to the next is called reliability.

Validity refers to the extent to which a test measures what it is supposed to measure.

Generally speaking, practicality refers to the case of administration and scoring of a test.

Guidelines for Constructing Structure Items:

        1. The stem of the item should represent a natural dialog in casual speech. A context like:

" Are you going home? "

" Yes, I am. I`m ........home."   sounds like a mechanical  classroom activity because such language is unlikely in a normal situation.

        2. Each item should have only one acceptable answer.

       3. The stem should provide sufficient context and the alternatives should be brief and to the point.

       4. The options should be of equal size.

       5. Each item should test only one point.

Guidelines for Constructing Listening Comprehension Items:

     1. Selection of pictures should be done with great care. Pictures should be simple and easy to understand.

     2. Sampling of spoken stimuli should be carefully done to ensure that they represent typical real-life speech activities.

Testing Reading Comprehension:

Reading comprehension tests try to determine the examinees` ability to get meaning from the printed material. In the preparation of reading selection, it is advisable to keep certain points in mind.

        1. The passages should be realistic in terms of language use.

         2. Reading tests should comprise passages whose content is suitable , culturally fair, and representative of the knowledge and interests of the subjects.

         3. Each reading passage should have enough substance to allow for an appropriate number of logical comprehension items.

All these notes that were pointed to are suggestions that we as English teachers should take into account. There are  also suggestions for constructing pronunciation and spelling items that should be considered like those points that were represented briefly before.

 Reading Comprehension  Skill

Pre-Reading Activities

e.g:

Ali, one of the students in the class, is about 160 centimeters tall and he weighs about 80 kilos.

The teacher asks the students: Is he thin?

Students: No.

Teacher: No he is very fat . Or he is too fat.

Teacher : Is is easy for him to walk a long way ? For example from home to school?

Students: No.

Teacher: What should he do?

Teacher : He should lose weight.

Teacher : Do you know how he should lose weight?

Students may answer: By exercise.

Teacher: Yes. By doing exercises every day, he can lose weight . If he does so, after a few months he will become fit , I mean he will weigh about 70 kilos.

Reading Activities

1.        What is the function of this paragraph? (Introduction)

2.         Considering so many reasons , What will happen in the next paragraph?

3.        What does “it” in line 2 refer to ?

4.        What does the writer mean by “It is time to get right into it …”?

سپس نوبت به پاراگراف بعدي تحت عنوان Exercise makes your heart happy  مي رسد.پاراگراف دوم و سوم را مانند پاراگراف اول عمل مي كند و سئولاتي مانند سئولات زير مطرح مي نمايد.

1.        How are Paragraph “1” and “2” related ?

2.        How are paragraph “2” and “3” related?

3.        What does aerobic exercise mean?

4.        What is the meaning of the word “repetitive” ? How do you know?

5.        How does the number of blood cell change when you exercise?

مشابه موارد ذكر شده را متوان در پاراگراف هاي بعدي اين درس نيز انجام داد و معلم گرامي عمده ي توجهش بايد به به مهارت هاي خواندن مانند paragraph division, prediction , inference, references,  و نيز ارتباط جملات متن با توجه به conjunctions, punctuation marks  و عبارات كليدي مثل so, but, although, however, or, …..

باشد.

Post Reading Activities

Should I Teach Vocabulary or Roots?
To me, it`s like choosing between teaching phonics and spelling.

What should you teach a first grader? Phonics or spelling? Well, you focus on phonics first and you build a solid foundation - a command of phonics. That provides the fundamental tools for spelling. Then you move on to spelling. If you didn`t have those phonics tools, every new spelling word would be harder to learn.

It`s the same way with vocabulary study. You lay a solid foundation of roots. Take a year to learn about 100 common roots and master them. (Note: many classroom-oriented roots workbooks give introduction and exposure to roots, but not mastery.) Then, with the fundamental tools in place, move on to vocabulary study. All future years of vocabulary study will be easier because you have the right tools - roots.

You study a *little* vocab while you`re learning roots. And you`ll add a *few* more roots to your "toolbox" in every year`s vocabulary study. It`s just like phonics vs. spelling - you do a little spelling when you`re first learning phonics, and you incorporate a little phonics when you move on to spelling. But mostly you lay the groundwork in one subject, and then you move on to the other.

Of course, you need to also cover the other side of vocab development - reading lots of good books. People who read the most (non-twaddle books) tend to have the best vocabularies. The Weakness of Workbooks
The only way to ensure that a student retains the vocabulary he`s exposed to is to see it in his reading and/or hear it used in conversation -- over and over and over. Tests to not ensure retention. Even cumulative reviews won`t do that. They just slightly extend the amount of time it will take before the word is forgotten.

While I don`t believe a completely independent, out-of-context vocabulary study does much to improve a child`s vocabulary, I do believe that addressing the vocabulary in a child`s reading is helpful. So if a student is reading a science text, it is helpful if the meanings of the terms are addressed. If a child is reading a novel, it`s helpful if the meanings of unfamiliar words are addressed. I think this enhances his opportunity to learn the vocabulary that he reads.

If They Don`t Retain It, What`s the Point?
I`ve been frustrated using the workbook approach to vocabulary because it feels like my kids are going through the motions, but I don`t feel like they are really learning anything for the long term. I`m eager to see how root study goes.

Game Ideas to Reinforce Vocabulary
We have one of those smaller size (but not the smallest) marker boards on the fridge. It is actually on the side of the fridge where it can be seen from the table where my kids are sitting when they are doing school work or eating meals or having a snack. When I want them to memorize something, like a bible verse, I write it on this board. It is amazing that I don`t even have to say anything. They are just constantly looking at it and talking about it and saying it.

You might get one of these and write the vocabulary words on it. Maybe make a game out of seeing how many times a day they can accurately use one in a sentence. For a little silly fun, you could have a specific time where they are to try to use them in a sentence as a substitute for some other word that has a totally different meaning. Another idea is every time they are going to use the word in a sentence, they have to say it in Pig Latin. I know my kids will conjure up all sorts of reasons to use a word if they can get silly with it. One thing my 9yo dd likes to do is take her vocabulary words and try to make one sentence using all of them. Have fun!

Teaching Vocabulary Amid Read-Alouds
I just focus on developing their vocabulary through the books I read aloud to them. When I get to a word I think is interesting for its difficulty, I say, "Synonyms", and if they start rattling some off, I know that they are familiar with the word. If not, I might reread the sentence again if I think they should be able to get it from the context. If they still can`t get it, I give them two or more options to choose from, one of them being the correct meaning of the word. Then I reread the sentence again, just to reinforce the sound and meaning of the new word.

When I ask for synonyms of a word, I use that opportunity to add onto the list they give me, to broaden their vocabulary even though they might know the original word. I try to be efficient.

Also, if my children use a great new word in their conversation, I stop everything and comment on what a great word choice the word was, or I might say, "You hit the jackpot with *that* word," or "What a great word (!) " or some such gloriously gushing comment. My kids love to use new words because of this. I really do get excited and feel rewarded when they use a great new word that they learned a day or a week earlier. If You`re Teaching Latin, Should You Still Teach Roots?
We`ll be studying Henle next year *and* using Vocabulary Vine. Two reasons:

1.       It is my opinion that workbook vocabulary programs don`t accomplish much. Not only has my own experience shown this, but I am taking an ed. course, and research has demonstrated that workbooks don`t help much with retention. A root study arms the student with better tools for understanding a larger base of words.

2.       Latin is wonderful for *improving* vocabulary (don`t Latin students have better verbal SAT scores?), but I don`t think Latin "gets you there," if that makes sense. I don`t think Latin necessarily creates a strong vocabulary. Besides, a root study is great reinforcement for any derivative work done in Latin.

Great Vocabulary Curriculum for High School
Vocabulary for the High School Student and Vocabulary For the College-Bound Student

Languishing at Latin? Given up on Greek? How about overwhelmed by Old English? If you re looking for a strongly roots-based vocabulary program, look no further--VFHHS and VFCBS will fit the bill. Part of a high school series which ends with The Joy of Vocabulary, these two work texts provide ample exposure to and practice with the vast number of English words drawn from both classical and modern foreign cultures. Each book contains 9-12 chapters with a thematic approach to vocabulary (e.g.: words from classical mythology and history; enlarging vocabulary through context; enlarging vocabulary through central ideas, such as agreement/disagreement; concealment/disclosure; poverty/wealth; etc.).

As with other roots programs, this one includes plenty of material on Latin and Greek elements; but what I especially appreciate is its inclusion of words from Anglo-Saxon as well as words taken whole into English from modern foreign languages. How much less rich a language English would be without such words as elite, nonchalant, and sobriquet (French); crescendo, dilettante, and gusto (Italian); renegade, bonanza, and peccadillo (Spanish)! The varied approach to the vocabulary keeps the student engaged: each lesson begins with a defined vocabulary list, followed by assorted exercises, such as filling in blanks in sentences; choosing a synonym or antonym; analogies; and my favorite, condensing a lengthy sentence into one of no more than four words (great practice in concise writing!) Review exercises could be used as tests, if desired.

How to Teach Vocabulary: Specifics
Why Study Vocabulary? Why is a good vocabulary important?

o        People judge you by your vocabulary. An impressive vocabulary makes an impression.

o        So you can speak concisely and precisely.

o        So you can better understand what you read and hear. When you don`t recognize a word in your reading, it depletes your understanding of the piece.

o        SAT preparation

2.       How to Build Vocabulary, Step 1: Teach Roots

o        Why? Learning vocabulary without roots is like learning to read without phonics. More than 70 percent of English comes from roots - 95% of words of more than one syllable! An understanding of these roots is a powerful tool for learning and understanding English vocabulary. According to Samuel C. Brownstein, "Learning fifty key word parts can help you unlock the meaning of over 100,000 words!" Which is easier to learn, fifty roots or 100,000 new words?

A  knowledge of roots will give you a richer understanding of known words, clues to decipher unknown words, hints to help you learn new words quicker, memory joggers to recall nearly-forgotten words, and a grasp of how words are built, as a foundation for learning technical vocabulary. Besides, roots are fun to play around with!

o        How? Find a roots curriculum that teaches for long-term retention, not just an introduction and overview. It should tap into the fun of roots - roots are fun, so learning them should be fun too. Be sure it teaches the common Latin prefixes such as re-, con-, de-, ex-, etc. They`re more common than any other roots, but for many programs ignore them. Don`t waste your study time on obscure words nobody actually uses. If your curriculum can`t find useful words to demonstrate a root, is the root really all that useful???

Vocabulary Vine is a roots curriculum that provides long-term retention through a variety of learning steps, and it taps into the fun of playing with roots. It takes what students already know - familiar words - and uses them to help him master something new - roots.

Master about 100 common roots. Start looking for them in language. Learn to read an etymology (word origin information) in a good college dictionary. Whenever you look up a word, check its roots in the dictionary.

Once you`ve learned some roots, you`ll start noticing them in tough vocabulary words you encounter in your reading. Everyone will start using their roots knowledge (one prong of your vocab program), to decipher words from your reading (the other prong of your vocab program).

3.       Step 2: Read, Read, Read!

o        Until junior high, I`d skip vocab workbooks and use the time reading instead. Why? A good book is more enjoyable. You learn words in context. You see yow they`re used, yielding a richer understanding. You see the words serve a real purpose; they`re not just for a contrived worksheet. A real author needed this word for real writing. Be sure it`s quality literature, not blither.

o        As you read aloud to your children, you`ll encounter words they might not know. Ask them if they know what it means. Teach them to decipher words through context and roots. Then re-read the sentence to reinforce pronunciation & meaning in context. If mom doesn`t know a word, be a role model: grab a dictionary (keep it close) and look it up. Whenever you look up a word, check the roots. It will help you better understand and retain the word. If it`s a useful root, add it to your card set.

o        Play games with new vocabulary words.

4.       In Junior High or Senior High

o        The teen years are the time for more intensive study. Many people switch to a vocabulary program when their students graduate out of spelling, typically in junior high. By senior high many focus more energy on vocabulary in preparation for the SAT.

o        If you`re looking for a high school curriculum, I recommend Vocabulary for the High School Student and Vocabulary For the College-Bound Student. See above.

o        See Resources for Teaching Vocabulary for ideas to supplement any vocabulary study. You may want to incorporate the SAT high-frequency vocabulary lists in your studies.

In-Depth Vocabulary Study from Context
We work vocabulary off of a passage in a story we are already reading. It has to be a story hard enough that it needs a little bit of discussion to totally understand every detail in the passage. Here are some suggestions for working with vocabulary words in a passage:

Choose vocab word(s) from a passage you choose to work on... ´Choose important words, not just "unknown" words; it is surprising how much you can learn from analyzing words you supposedly already know. Then we work with the words in the following fashion

for analysis:

·         phonetic analysis for spelling and endings

·         identify how the word functions as a part of speech in its sentence

·         look it up and find the appropriate definition for the word in the dictionary (pay attention to part of speech) and copy the definition

·         verify the meaning in the sentence

for imitation:

·         copy the original sentence

·         look at the word`s endings (e.g. noun plurals, verb tenses, comparatives for adjectives and adverbs)

·         use a thesaurus; work with antonyms and synonyms to the word.

Finally, take Aristotle`s ten categories and work the word through all the possible or appropriate predications (all the things one can say about that word). This list is from Aristotle`s Ten Categories

1.       WHO or WHAT (1) is the subject of this discourse?

2.       WHAT KIND of a subject is it (i.e. he, she, or it)?

3.       HOW MUCH OR HOW BIG is it?

4.       WHOSE is it, TO WHOM does it belong, or WHO is affected?

5.       WHAT HAPPENED or WAS DONE?

6.       HOW DID IT FEEL? or WHAT WAS SUFFERED in this event?

7.       WHERE?

8.       WHEN?

9.       WHAT was the SITUATION?

10.   WHAT WAS CUSTOMARY or HABITUAL about it?

BEING A TEACHER

Managing a Class

When answering the following questions consider:
1. The course so far you have had and how you have felt.
2. Past experiences of good / bad teachers you have had.
The Physical Environment
1. Seating
How do you want the students to sit?
What choices are open to you?
What may influence your decision?
Are you going to give them the chance to move in your lesson? Why? Why not?
Where are you going to place yourself?
Are you going to stand, sit, and kneel
with the students or apart from the students?
How will this affect the atmosphere of the room?

2. Voice Projection
How loudly are you going to speak? Why?
How important is it that all the students hear and understand one another?
How can you ensure this?
3. Blackboard
Can the entire students see the blackboard?
Do they need to in your lesson?
Rapport between Teacher and Students
1. Physical Position
Where will you be?
How does distance and position affect your relationship with the students?

2. Eye Contact
When I was teaching young children, I trained myself to share my eye contacts out among the group. I find this is crucial in establishing a `fair` relationship with them. I`ve seen many teachers who concentrate their eye contacts on only a few students, and this does affect the feeling in a group. Certain students are disciples, but others feel separated, or experience themselves as less interesting, or as `failures`. - from `Impro` (K. Johnstone)
How will the seating arrangements affect ease of eye contact?
What must you guard against?
2. Using Students` Names
How can you remember all the names quickly? Is this important?
What should you do / not do if you forget a name?
What is wrong with nominating a student before you ask a question?

4. Personal Involvement / Enjoyment
Seeming personally involved and genuinely interested in what the students are saying and not just how.
5. Encouragement
I`ve also trained myself to make positive comments, and to be as direct as possible. I say `Good` instead of `That`s enough`. I`ve actually heard teachers say `Well, let`s see who fails at this one`, when introducing an exercise. Some teachers get reassurance when their students fail. We must all have encountered the teacher who gives a self-satisfied smile when a student makes a mistake. Such an attitude is not productive to a good, warm feeling in the group. - from `Impro` (K. Johnstone)
How do you feel if something you think you have done well is not acknowledged?
6. Self-confidence
If you are confident in yourself as a teacher and in what you are teaching then the students will trust you.
What gives you more self-confidence? (Think of planning etc.)
7. Clarity
How can you make your instructions and explanations very clear?
How can you be sure the students have understood?
Is `Do you understand?` a good check of understanding? Why? Why not?
Student`s Individual Sense of Belonging to a Group
1. Teacher involving all equally

Have you ever felt left out of a class? Why?
What can the teacher do to help?
What is outside his/her control?
2. Expressing their own personalities

What aspects of your character would you want to share with a group a) a few minutes after meeting them, b) having got to know the others over time?
What would you never want to express?
How would you feel if you were never given a chance to express yourself personally?
3. Constitution of groups in the class

How can you prevent students always sitting in the same seat?
Why is this a problem?
What ways can you think of re-organizing the group at a) the start of the class, b) for particular activities?
